POLSON (AP) — A 33-year-old Dixon man was arrested Monday and being held without bail on pending murder charges in the disappearance four years ago of Raymond Dunwebber of Charlo.
The suspected remains of Dunwebber, 44 when he disappeared, were found Friday in a remote area of southwestern Lake County, Sheriff Bill Barron said.
Barron said the remains were found by a hiker and his dog. Detectives returned with the hiker Saturday, finding human remains, personal belongings and other evidence — all of which was sent to the state crime laboratory in Missoula for positive identification, he said.
"Smith was developed as a suspect early in the investigation but was not arrested due to a possible sighting of Dunwebber in Sanders County," he said.
The sighting was never substantiated, meaning charges couldn't be filed, but with the discovery of the remains over the weekend the case could proceed, the sheriff said.
Smith was ordered to make an initial appearance in Justice Court at Polson on Tuesday.
