A Billings man has been arrested on suspicion of arson and criminal endangerment related to a fire in the basement of a residence early Wednesday morning on Terry Avenue that caused an estimated $150,000 in damage.

Edward Michael Halvorson, 43, is being held in the Yellowstone County Detention Facility on one count of arson and four counts of criminal endangerment, according to a press release issued by Lt. Neil Lawrence of the Billings Police Department.

BPD and the Billings Fire Department responded to a structure fire on the 700 block of Terry at about 1:20 a.m. Wednesday. BPD detectives were later brought out to the scene and questioned Halvorson.

"The investigation revealed that the fire was intentionally set," according to the release. "It was discovered that the gas line and the water heater had been cut and an ignition source was used to ignite the gas."

Halvorson was arrested at about 3 p.m. Wednesday, Lawrence said.

The building was occupied at the time of the fire but no one was injured, according to a press release from BFD Deputy Fire Marshal Jaime Fender.

Heavy fire and smoke damage was observed where the fire burned but the building and its contents were insured, according to the release.
