A Billings man who was moving to Butte died in a single-vehicle accident Thursday morning on Highway 69 about 12 miles south of Boulder.
Joseph Haley, 64, was pronounced dead at the scene about 10 a.m. after his 2002 S-10 Blazer went off the road, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
Officer Joe Cohenour said Haley was moving to Butte at the time of the accident and that his vehicle was loaded with heavy boxes.
Haley’s vehicle veered off the right side of the road into a ditch, and then hit a utility pole. Investigators suspect the vehicle may have been on cruise control and continued moving for several hundred feet before veering back on the road. The vehicle then rolled and went off the left side of the road, where it rolled again before coming to rest.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
The victim wasn’t wearing a seat belt, Cohenour said. Investigators suspect that Haley was battered by the boxes inside the cab during the crash.
