Water Main Break

A sunken depression is visible in the asphalt at the intersection of Burlington and 8th Street West after a water main burst Thursday.

A water main break along Eighth Street West created a small crater at the Burlington Avenue intersection Thursday.

The break washed out the dirt and rocks below the asphalt, causing the street surface to sink in a bit at the terminus of Burlington. The water found an exit where the asphalt meets the curb.

Water Main Break

Rocks and debris lie on the sidewalk near the intersection of Burlington and 8th Street West after a water main burst Thursday.

Water tends to find the path of least resistance, said Quincy Clark with Billings Public Works. By about 4 p.m., he had the water stream shut off, which had been sending dirt downhill on the sidewalk.

A few houses along Eighth Street were without water service until crews could restore it, Clark said. He said the repair could take a few hours, depending on what crews find when they dig down to the main.
