Body of angler found in lake

SEELEY LAKE - The body of a 78-year-old Seeley Lake man has been found south of here in Salmon Lake where he drowned while fishing earlier this month, officials said Friday.

The victim was Frank Richards, who drowned Sept. 10 after falling into the water while fixing a fish finder on his pontoon boat.

Divers spent more than a week looking for the body, but efforts were hindered by poor visibility from an algae bloom and a layer of suspended sediment. Richards' family brought in Gene and Sandy Ralston of Boise, Idaho, to use their side-scan sonar equipment to search for the body.

The equipment showed the body near where divers had looked.

"They went right around it," said Scott Newell, resident Missoula County deputy coroner in Seeley Lake.

Sheriff Mike McMeekin said the man's empty boat was found idling on the opposite shore of the lake about 1-1/2 hours after Richards was last seen.
