A man was hospitalized Friday morning after jumping in front of a van on the 900 block of Main Street in the Heights.
Billings Police Officer Terry Bechtold said the man, a 49-year-old transient, told police that "he was feeling down and stepped out" into traffic, where he was struck by a cargo van.
The accident occurred about 9 a.m., Bechtold said.
One witness reported seeing the man, whose name was not released, standing on the sidewalk one second and gone the next, the officer said. Another witness reported seeing the victim run into Main Street.
The man was struck in the southbound lane, on the west side of the street.
Initial reports were that the impact threw the man and that he was unresponsive. However, he was able to give officers a statement at the scene a short time later. He was taken by ambulance to Billings Clinic with what appeared to be minor injuries, Bechtold said.
At the scene, the van was stopped in a business parking lot in the 900 block of Main Street.
It had damage to the front passenger side and front of the vehicle.
No citations were issued.
