One person was killed and another was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound Thursday after a shooting southwest of Miles City.

Both the injured person and the deceased were described as adults, said Custer County Sheriff Tony Harbaugh. He did not give any more identifying information.

"I'm still trying to run down my victim's family, and I'm hoping that social media doesn't beat me to that," Harbaugh said Thursday evening.

Harbaugh didn't know injured person's condition Thursday evening.

A Moon Creek area resident called Custer County dispatch to report a shooting at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Harbaugh said. The area where the shooting occurred is about 30 to 40 miles outside of Miles City.

The Custer County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the scene Thursday night, Harbaugh said.

"I just want to assure the public that we're not looking for anyone, there's no public safety risk involved," Harbaugh said.

The Montana Department of Criminal Investigations has also responded to assist in the investigation.
