One person died Thursday in a deputy-involved shooting on White Buffalo Road in Huntley, according to Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder.
Linder said two deputies were responding to a burglary in the area of White Buffalo Road when they spotted an SUV that matched the description of a stolen vehicle.
The deputies began following the vehicle up White Buffalo Road when they got stuck in the snow. The SUV drove ahead, but then turned around and started accelerating toward the deputies, Linder said.
That's when, Linder said, the deputies shot and killed the driver.
Linder said it's unclear if the incident is related to the burglary.
He said there was a dog in the car at the time, which was later taken away by Animal Control.
White Buffalo Road is south of Interstate 94 and west of Pryor Creek Road.
The last deputy-involved shooting in the area occurred on July 5, 2013, when Sheriff's Sgt. Shane Skillen shot and killed Dean Randolph Jess, a Montana State Prison escapee, near a busy West End shopping area. Officials said Jess refused to come out of the stolen vehicle he was driving and had reached for a gun.
A coroner's inquest determined the shooting was justified.
