A man died in a West End motorcycle crash late Thursday.
The one-motorcycle crash at a roundabout on the 3600 block of Grand Avenue was reported by a passing driver around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Billings Police Lt. Riley Finnegan said. The driver who reported the incident initially thought the person was sleeping on the roundabout. Police aren't sure when the crash occurred.
Skid marks on the road indicate the motorcyclist may not have seen the roundabout and crashed into it. As of midnight, streetlights in the area were out. Police were not sure if the lights were off for nearby construction or as a result of the crash.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He wasn't wearing a helmet, and speed appeared to be a factor. At midnight, police didn't know his age, where he was from, or his identity.
Billings police closed Grand Avenue from 38th Street West to Zimmerman Trail after the crash. Finnegan expected the road would be closed another three to four hours, but said it should be open again for the Friday morning commute.
The Billings Police Department is investigating.
