The Coffee Tavern opening day

Coffee Tavern, pictured here in January 2017, opened at their location on 2821 Second Avenue North.

The 24-hour downtown coffee shop The Coffee Tavern has closed.

According to owner Larry Heafner, the shop at 2821 Second Ave. N., is moving elsewhere. He declined to comment on where or when he plans to reopen the business.

Heafner wouldn't specify when the store had closed, but several items had been moved out of the storefront as of Thursday.

The business didn't close due to financial issues or from the backlash he's received in the past for offensive comments he made on social media, Heafner said.

"We've got more money than we need," he said.

Heafner cited crime in downtown Billings as his reason for leaving.

"We closed this shop because there is a homeless and vagrant problem," he said.

Heafner was stabbed outside the shop in December 2017 after an apparent confrontation. The case ended in a mistrial in January 2019 after jurors could not agree whether Paul Bixby was guilty in the stabbing.
