Lockwood firefighters work on putting out hot spots from a fire north of Lockwood Road on Saturday afternoon as a train goes by behind them.

Members of the Lockwood Fire Department put out a grass fire just south of the Montana Rail Link tracks, adjacent to Lockwood Road, Saturday afternoon.

The fire started at noon, just after a train passed by, said Acting Captain Kevin Sparrow of the Lockwood department. A witness saw four separate fires break out, and exacerbated by the windy conditions, the fire spread out over a half-mile.

It burned about two acres of land, Sparrow said. Firefighters knocked down the fire in 10 minutes, but spent another couple of hours dousing all the hot spots. The fire also burned two or three MRL communication poles.
