Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway's Holiday Express train arrived Monday at the Billings Depot.
The train travels the country in November and December taking members of the military and their children for rides.
At the Billings stop, railroad officials delivered $5,000 in grant money to Montana State University Billings for its Veterans Outreach Center, and $5,000 to the Friends of the Yellowstone National Cemetery.
Before stopping in Billings, the train stopped in Glendive Sunday night for a dinner. While there, the foundation awarded the Eastern Montana Veterans Home $5,000. The event drew about 48 people; another 48 showed up in Billings.
This is the 11th year BNSF has run the event, and the company plans to host more than 2,000 military personnel and their families this year, according to a press release from BNSF. This year the Holiday Express also plans to make stops in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming and Kansas.
The BNSF Holiday Express features 15 restored vintage railcars decked out with holiday decorations, and is powered by two of BNSF’s newest locomotives.
