Kent, Washington-based outdoor retailer REI is building its first store in Billings on the far West End.
The building, which has been approved by the city, is going up near the northwest corner of Shiloh Road and King Avenue West on a new road called Henry Chapple, part of the St. Vincent Healthcare Subdivision.
Rumors of REI's arrival to Billings have been circulating for more than a year. Both the designer and contractor on the new building have declined to comment on the project. REI, in a statement earlier this summer, said it had no news yet to share.
Plans for the project, filed earlier this month with the city's building division, show details for a 23,457-square-foot main floor and modern architecture prominently displaying the REI logo.

The building itself is estimated to cost $1.5 million, according to the building permit application filed by Collaborative Design, the architect and design firm handling the project.
REI already has three locations in Montana; the nearest store to Billings is in Bozeman. It also has a store in Missoula and one in Kalispell, which opened in fall 2018.
No opening date has been announced for the Billings store; construction has started and is expected to continue through the end of the year.
