A person running along the Canyon Creek ditch north of Gabel Road Friday discovered a stolen SUV in the water, according to the Billings Police Department.
The SUV was recently listed as stolen, and the runner came upon the vehicle at about 12:40 p.m. Friday, according to BPD Sgt. Scott Conrad.
The Billings Fire Department didn't try a water rescue after they determined the vehicle was empty, Conrad said.
The vehicle's windows — including the back hatch — were open, Conrad said.
The SUV appeared to be almost completely submerged, with approximately a foot or less of the car's body above water. The car might be a 2006 Lincoln Navigator, according to police.
The registered owner and a towing company have both been notified of the vehicle's discovery and it will be up to them to determine a plan for removal.
It's possible the SUV will remain in the West End ditch until water is drained from it in the fall, Conrad said.
