Stillwater Mining Co. will conduct mine tours to help the public better understand the companys water management systems, which may help participants submit comments for use in a draft environmental impact statement.
The Montana Department of Environmental Quality, Forest Service and SMC have set the following tour dates:Stillwater Mine water management system: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 9.
East Boulder Mine water management system: 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 11.The agencies and SMC selected these times and dates to allow the working public a chance to participate. The tours will be limited to 25 people for safety and logistical reasons. People who attended recent scoping meetings and indicated a desire to tour the sites will be given the first seats. Other seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Tour participants will not be able to leave the vans at the mine sites for safety reasons.
Because of space limits, the agencies request that people who already have seen the mine sites not sign up. The agencies also ask that families and groups send only one person on the tour. No children under 18 will be allowed to participate. The tours are only for those who plan to submit comments by the Aug. 20 deadline.
