Billings members of the United Steelworkers Union failed to ratify a new labor contract negotiated earlier this week between management at the ExxonMobil refinery in Lockwood and union representatives there.
Contract details are negotiated between a small group of representatives from the two sides, but the contract itself must be voted on and approved by a majority of the union members.
The two sides came to a tentative deal earlier this week, and union leaders Tuesday recommended a ratifying vote. However when union members voted Wednesday they elected not to approve the new contract.
"While we are disappointed in this outcome, the company remains available to meet with the union to continue to bargain in good faith," said a statement from ExxonMobil sent to refinery employees.
Union members are operating on a rolling 24-hour extension of their previous contract with the refinery.
