In the Schools

The Rocky Mountain College Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Equestrian Team recently competed in a show in Logan, Utah. The RMC team won nine first places, four second places, and nine third places, competing against teams from Carroll College, the University of Montana, Montana State University, Utah State University, University of Montana Western, and the College of Southern Idaho. Taylor Day and Kristine Dillehay qualified for the Regional Show in Western Intermediate II Horsemanship. Rhiannon Laird also qualified for the Regional Show in Western Novice Horsemanship. The results of the two Western shows on Jan. 29 are as follows: Rachel Phillips of Laurel placed fifth and third in the Walk Trot classes on Saturday. Tasha Roseboom of San Clemente, Calif., placed fourth in the afternoon Walk Trot class. In Intermediate I Horsemanship, Erin Burns of Castle Rock, Colo., placed first in both shows. Jill Schellenberg of Jenison, Mich., placed third in both shows and Lydia Harvey of Poulsbo, Wash., placed fourth and second. The Intermediate II Horsemanship class had seven Rocky members competing. Becca Severson of Plymouth, Minn., placed first in her second show. Becca Wolf of Boise, Idaho, also placed first. Lindsy Martens of Colstrip, placed fourth in the morning show. Liz Marklin of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, placed sixth. Kristin Dillehay of Rosewood, Ohio, placed fifth and fourth, qualifying her for the regional show in February. Taylor Day of Las Vegas placed first and second, also qualifying her for the regional show. In Novice Horsemanship, Kayla Walter of Windermer, B.C., Canada, placed third and fourth. Rhiannon Laird of Granger, Ind., placed first, winning her points to qualify for the regional show as well as moving up into the Advanced Horsemanship class. Shauna Ketcham of Livermore, Calif., placed fourth and third. Bethany Bappe of Riverton, Wyo., placed first and third; Bappe also competed last year at the IHSA Semi-National Show in Cazenovia, N.Y. Jessica Steinke of Camas, Wash., placed sixth and fourth. Meredith Burton of Camillus, N.Y., placed fifth and third in Advanced Horsemanship. Rhiannon Laird, who moved to Advanced Horsemanship after placing first in Novice Horsemanship, placed second. Results of the English show from Sunday, Jan. 30, are as follows: Jill Schellenberg placed third in the Beginner Walk Trot Canter class on the Flat. Kristin Dillehay placed second and Liz Marklin placed fourth in the Advanced Walk Trot Canter class on the Flat. In the Novice on the Flat class, which was split into two sections, Amber McNally of Spanaway, Wash., placed fourth. Kathy Cahill of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., placed second. Kelsey Merriam of Lakewood, Wash., placed fourth. Rhiannon Laird placed fifth and Meredith Burton placed third. In the Novice over Fences, which was also split into two sections, Amber McNally and Kelsey Merriam both placed first. Rhiannon Laird and Meredith Burton placed fourth in the Novice over Fences class.

Jason Tobin has completed his FAA Commercial Rating at Rocky Mountain College. Tobin is the son of Leah Tobin and is a sophomore majoring in Aeronautical Science at Rocky Mountain College. Tobin is a 2009 graduate of Skyview High.

Forensics Results

Billings Central Catholic High School participated at the State A Speech. Debate, and Drama Tournament hosted by Laurel High School on Jan. 29. They earned the State Championship award in the Drama discipline and attained second in the Speech and Debate category. Overall, there are 21 school in Montana competing for these awards. BCCHS Speech and Debate students are coached by Mark Elison, Nathan Schmitz and Danielle Barton. The Drama students are coached by Tonia Fisher-Clark and Danielle Barton. The students finished as follows in their events.

Policy Debate: Jacob Selensky and Michaela Jacobsen, first; Maya Arce and Libby Harris, fourth.

Lincoln Douglas Debate: Skyler Gunderson, third; Ellen Hyams, fourth.
