Ruth Moss, former owner of the Babcock Theatre in downtown Billings, died a few weeks ago. At the City Council meeting Monday night (yeah, I know it's already Wednesday, but I've been sequestered on an upcoming story), downtown redevelopment guru Greg Krueger told the council that Moss died a few weeks ago while recovering from a stroke.
Krueger said Moss didn't want an obituary, a funeral or a big fuss, but it's worth mentioning here because of recent developments at the Babcock. While I never met Moss (although I think I called her when I moved to Billings, looking for an apartment, and she brusquely told me that I didn't want to live in her building), I heard stories about how protective she was of the theater.
She recently sold it to two couples who have plans to renovate it and lease out the adjacent retail space, using nearly $2 million in city tax increment finance funds.
