Steam rises from Billings industries as the temperature dropped well below zero early Monday. The 30 second time exposure was made from a hill on the east end of Lockwood, looking toward the southwest. I started shooting pictures at about 5 a.m. after setting up the Nikon D3 on a tripod. I experimented with a two minute exposure but the motion in the steam columns made them fade so I settled on 30 seconds. After a few frames I would return to the car to let the camera warm up. The blue and orange colors are from mercury vapor (blue) and sodium (orange) street and security lights.
