Eastern troopers. The Montana Highway Patrol district covering the eastern third of the state gained seven new troopers from the latest 10-person MHP academy. Based in Glendive, Culbertson, Wolf Point, Sidney, Terry and Plentywood, the new officers will augment a force that has been stretched by increased traffic and calls, much of it related to the region’s oil boom.
Searing summer. The end of August brought one of the hottest days of the year with Miles City thermometers hitting a record-breaking 102 on Tuesday and Billings tying its heat record of 99.
Coal cash. The Yellowstone County Commission voted to seek $349,433 from the Montana Coal Board to cover 38 percent of the costs of repairing a section of 21 Mile Road east of Broadview. Because the road was damaged during construction of Signal Peak Energy’s railroad spur and because the mine and its employees use the road, its repair is a good use of a Coal Board grant.
