I was disappointed and appalled to read about the June 2 City Council meeting. I don't understand the vile and misconstrued opposition to the non-discrimination ordinance. The NDO is not about freedom of speech, religious beliefs or taking away rights of others. It is about extending certain assurances to the LGBT community that I and most others enjoy everyday.

I know that I'm able to shop, job hunt and find housing without fear that I will be refused because I'm a woman. There are laws in place to protect me. That is why that meeting is so distressing.

Not only were the same excuses thrown into the argument about it not being needed and how it stifles freedoms, but Bible verses taken out of context and comparisons of gay people to criminals were used to argue against the NDO. Just because your interpretation of the Bible says being LGBT is wrong, it does not mean that that religion should be used to interpret our laws.

Comparing gay people to pedophiles and the like is a disgusting, invalid argument. LGBT NDO is protecting people from discrimination.

Discrimination against LGBT exists whether you see it everyday or not. You may even being choosing to turn a blind eye to it. That is why we need the NDO. We as a community can always improve and, as we grow, we need to become more welcoming. By spouting hate, using old-fashioned, disgusting arguments against equal rights and by not acknowledging other struggles we debilitate the Magic City.
