“Charity begins at home” is an old way of saying what we hope to give new meaning to with our Give Local Yellowstone Valley Region event on May 3. Billings Community Foundation would like to add its voice to thanks expressed by Helena-based Montana Community Foundation for the amazing generosity of our fellow Montanans. It is heartwarming to all of us who serve as volunteers on the board of BCF that the whole community foundation effort got its start right here in Billings and Lewistown with roughly 75 local community foundations now operating in Montana.

Keeping it local is all about relationships; people who live in a community tend to want to help those good causes, programs and projects that have a personal effect on the community where they live. For BCF that “local community” includes the seven-county area around Billings served by our clients.

The Give Local Yellowstone Valley Region event will help nonprofits gain additional exposure for the good works they do in each community and to fund-raise in a new way, reaching out to the next generation’s charitable instincts with an easy online, one-day event.

Keeping it local has been BCF’s mission since 2006 when volunteers dedicated to keeping a community foundation in Billings began with just $500 in the bank. Today we are stewards for more than $2 million in charitable funds and have awarded $130,000 in grants to more than 60 local nonprofits.
