In the July 14 paper in the Local and State section, if I am reading the articles right, a teacher rapes a 14-year-old student and has to go to a couple of classes and gets off with no charges, I'm guessing that would also mean he does not have to register as a sex offender. In a second article, a man gets a 15-year-old girl to send him sexually graphic photographs and gets 10 years in prison. How does someone get off for rape of a minor?
Editor's note: In July of 2010, several months after his 14-year-old victim killed herself, Stacey Rambold signed a plea agreement in which he admitted having sex with the girl, agreed to have no contact with children and to complete a sex offender treatment program. Prosecutors agreed to put the criminal case on hold for three years and eventually to dismiss felony rape charges. At the time, the chief prosecutor of the case said that a conviction at trial could not be obtained without the victim's testimony.
