This letter is in defense of Robyn Driscoll, one of my longtime grooming customers. Driscoll is a good person and a great dog owner, one of the responsible ones. And there lies the issue of vicious dogs. I have been bitten many times but never by a pit bull. I never met a pit bull I did not like. But in 20 years in the dog industry, I have been bitten by shepherds, border collies, Chihuahuas, poodles, many terriers and other breeds, too many to name.

Biting issues are usually caused by four reasons:

• Fear - not exposed to things in the world as a puppy.

• Poor breeding - breeders not looking for problems in their breed.

• Poor ownership - owners neglecting their dogs or teaching them to be vicious.

• Medical problems - brain tumors, hip or back problems and assorted other health issues.

The Michael Vicks and Linda Kapsas of this world are the kind of people who give specific breeds a bad name. We need to legislate the owners and breeders much better and let the wonderful breeds of dogs be dogs.
