The United States boasts of having the world's best universities, the world's strongest economy and the world's best-trained military. The vast majority of the people who are responsible for these successes were educated in American public schools.
Although public education has taken an unjustified beating in recent years, public educators in the trenches are doing as well as ever when it comes to preparing the youth of America for the future.
Furthermore, the story about Billings' ACT scores in the Aug. 31 Gazette is an indication that students in Billings, in particular, are thriving.
School District 2 is not perfect. Like any other school district in the nation, it has its challenges. Nevertheless, the taxpayers who live in Billings get a tremendous amount of educational bang for their buck.
Good things are happening every day in our public schools, but we need the support of the community to keep Billings' schools among the best in the nation.

This spring, voters will have an opportunity to keep Billings' public schools alive and well. I hope those of you in the silent majority will go to the polls and let your support for our successes be known, because we cannot continue to let 10 percent of our voters deprive our students of the resources they need to continue succeeding.
