We all have many reasons to be proud of being an American and our democratic system of government. Another star in our crown, in the opinion of many, was the election of Barack Obama as our country's next president.
Regardless of how you voted, our nation took notice and the world took notice. These Americans really do practice what they preach. All men and women are created equal, and all, indeed, have a chance to be what they want to be .
When the Democrats chose Obama as their standard bearer, they helped deliver a near fatal blow to racism. The subsequent election of Obama may well have driven a stake deep into the heart of bigotry of all kinds.
As Obama takes on the monumental task of getting America out of this domestic and foreign mess, hopefully he will succeed or fail as an American and not a hyphenated American. Just maybe the next generation will have no hyphenated Americans.
