I just knew that Fox News had to be in the middle of this latest misinformation assault. The TransCanada Keystone XL pipeline is supposed to create 20,000 jobs. Wrong. U.S. State Department study said 5,000 to 6,000. This study was initiated by a research group friendly with Big Oil and has been immediately called into question. Many of these jobs would be only temporary, lasting no more than two years. House Speaker Boehner claimed the pipeline would create 100,000 jobs. How disingenuous. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce claimed that the pipeline could create 250,000 permanent U.S. jobs. Wildly exaggerated and obviously politically motivated.
An independent study reported by Cornell University's Global Labor Institute found that the pipeline would add only 500 to 1,400 temporary construction jobs. These are the facts, folks.
The Keystone XL pipeline is designed to bring filthy tar sands oil from Canada to refineries on the Gulf Coast of Texas so that oil companies can profit by selling the oil overseas — principally China. It will not be used domestically and, for those concerned about our environment, should not be used, as it is nothing but a carbon bomb affecting the impact and acceleration of climate change.
