I'm writing to thank President Obama for his decision to reject the Keystone XL pipeline. This decision came in light of Montana's awful experience with the oil spill in the Yellowstone River and the fact that there is not yet a complete Emergency Response Plan for the pipeline. Not only that, but affected landowners and the public have not had any assurance that thinner, less-safe pipe will not be used in rural areas.
As an irrigator on the Yellowstone River below the crossing of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, I am glad to know that I will not be put at risk from potential spills from this pipeline. The 14 spills in the first year and a half of operations of the Keystone I pipeline leave much to be desired. We need to see a study of the safety of tar sands pipelines.
This time when Keystone applies, maybe they will have done their homework and be ready to treat landowners fairly.
Thank you to the president for his foresight.
