During the morning of April 1, while watching the news on CNN, I read a banner across the bottom of the TV screen, which mentioned that a lawmaker somewhere in the country had proposed a ban on DUI laws. A few minutes later, I was horrified (and angered) to discover that the legislator was from my home state of Montana! The TV footage showed Rep. Alan Hale (R-Basin) stating that all of Montana's DUI laws were creating an economic hardship on business (i.e. bar) owners.
Can this guy be serious? Was he really saying that because of the state DUI laws, bar owners in Montana are losing money because they can't sell enough liquor to their customers so that they become intoxicated and then get into their automobiles? Does he have any clue as to how many lives have been destroyed across the country by drunken drivers over the last several decades? Apparently, he considers the almighty dollar to be even more important than people's lives!
What Hale has proposed in the Montana Legislature is a disgrace! Thankfully, there are enough folks in the Legislature that were smart enough to oppose him. In so doing, they helped prevent Montana from becoming the laughingstock of the country.
I know that there have been a number of "wacko" proposals in the 2011 Legislature but the one proposed by Hale takes the cake!
