I want to comment on the actions of those Montana lawmakers who are proposing to cut funding for food stamps, family planning clinics, home heating assistance and Healthy Montana Kids. I feel that they are playing a game of chicken with the governor, because they have looked at the budget and cannot cut as much as they said they would. They are looking to force the governor to probably veto their budget and then will cry that the governor made them spend more.
It is time for those senators and representatives to become responsible to all the people of this state. All deserve a decent life, and most of all, the children of this state and the elderly who have little Social Security and possibly no retirement benefits. They deserve to have adequate food, heating, and health resources to meet their needs.
The same is true for those women who have little resources for health care. They deserve information and health care services that manage their reproductive lives.
We live in a state where many businesses want to pay minimum wages or near minimum wages and hire people part-time so they do not have to pay for health insurance and other benefits. They expect their workers to live on these wages. If the worker is a single mother with two or three children, this is impossible without the resources that the Legislature wants to cut.
Hungry children do not forget what it feels like. They will know that others could have done something. So, legislators, step up and fill their stomachs.
