The following is information you have not been told regarding the Jesus Shrine and which our local newspapers (Daily Interlake, Flathead Beacon and Whitefish Pilot) have declined to report on. They have all been aware of this information since early 12/11. This appears to be a travesty of journalism.
A Sept. 10, 1954, Whitefish Pilot article directly contradicts previous newspaper coverage, the story on the current plaque at the site, and public perception as to the shrine's origin. The current "war memorial" story that the shrine was intended as, and is, a war memorial erected by and in honor of veterans of World War II, can now be shown to be completely inaccurate.
Why the newspaper silence about this article, especially given the previous extensive coverage? While open to other possibilities, what is difficult to overlook is that this is the first evidence that has questioned the current "war memorial" story. We hope that one or more of our local newspapers will decide that their commitment to keep the local public informed would prevail.
If you are interested in reading the entire 1954 article, see photos of what looks to be a newly discovered covered plaque at the site, and read the most complete documented history on this issue, please visit flatheadsecular.com/jesus-shrine-debate/. We also encourage readers to email these editors directly with your concerns. Thank you.
