I recently read a letter by a very well-meaning and no doubt patriotic veteran, Joseph V. Koebbe. In the letter he insinuates that the terrorist organizations that are currently operating within the boundaries of Afghanistan will not pursue us when we leave.
As a serving member of the Army and a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, I must ask the question: Did we ask them to come over on Sept. 11? Are you aware that they have been stopped on a dozen occasions recently by the men and women of our law enforcement agencies? If they did it once, what will stop them from trying it again? Do you think that they have had a change of heart about the United States? I understand the frustration in a war that seems like it is never-ending, but didn’t the president just announce that we are coming home?
Please consider the historical and current events that are happening and that our country is a leader in peace, that we are establishing schools, vaccinating people who have never even seen a doctor, and educating people, young and old, who have no idea what “right” is unless it is told to them, and mostly by religious clerics who have less than a sixth-grade education themselves. Please do not give up on this righteous endeavor and remember the sacrifices by the slain in the Twin Towers and our valiant servicemen and women.
