Coal development is not my identity and culture.
As a young Northern Cheyenne, I do not seek to develop any kind of coal on Cheyenne homelands. I want to see more new solar panels and small wind turbines established around the reservation.
The Northern Cheyenne Tribe established four test meteorological towers around the reservation to collect data on the possibilities on wind energy for the tribe. Currently there is a proposal to establish 20 generating turbines at 1.5 megawatts a piece, which equals 30 megawatts of total wind generated energy.
Every Northern Cheyenne should understand that 136 years ago 300 hundred Northern Cheyenne fought over 14,000 U.S. Calvary troops in one year to return to the land that we now reside on. Our ancestors gave their lives for us to have the beautiful lands we reside on today. It is a Cheyenne value to protect the land which brings us our identity and culture.
As a Northern Cheyenne youth member, I will fight the proposed coal development near ancestral Cheyenne lands with as much determination as my 300 ancestors who defeated 14,000 troops.
