A Red Lodge woman has been sentenced to probation for embezzling more than $1 million from her former employer.
U.S. District Court Judge Susan Watters ordered April Drake Greer to serve five years of probation, including a year of house arrest, in a hearing on Thursday.
Watters also ordered Greer to pay $1.2 million in restitution — roughly $718,000 to Wildfire Defense Systems and $505,000 to Travelers Casualty and Surety Co.
Greer, a former director of human resources and controller for Red Lodge-based Wildfire Defense Systems Inc., made unauthorized transfers of money from the company's account into her personal checking account. She then altered bank statements to conceal the missing money, charging documents state.
Letters of support submitted on Greer’s behalf said she had a traumatic past that spurred her "hoarding and uncontrolled buying” habits, which led her to collect a massive wardrobe of mainly unworn garments with the tags still attached.
Reached Friday, a spokeswoman for Wildfire Defense Systems declined to comment.
