Carothers was the girlfriend of the 19-month-old's father, according to court documents. The baby was taken to the hospital on Feb. 23, 2016 after Carothers reported he became unresponsive while she was looking after him.

The baby was flown to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City. Doctors reported the baby had two brain bleeds that had caused the brain to move 5 millimeters, according to court documents. The baby was discharged from the hospital on Feb. 28, 2016. Doctors reported the baby would have activity restrictions and require subsequent medical treatment for the injuries, according to court documents.

Carothers denied the charges when Yellowstone County Sheriff Detectives interviewed her.
