John Weisner, astronomer and meteorologist for Lt. John Mullan, recorded the first naked-eye observation of the Great Comet of 1860. He said J. Colligan saw it near the northwestern horizon at 9:50 p.m. in Fort Benton. Few more observations were made before the comet disappeared in the aurora borealis on July 30.
