GREAT FALLS — Rescue crews found the body of a missing Malmstrom Air Force Base airman in the Sun River Thursday morning, not far from a railroad bridge he and others had been jumping off Wednesday evening.

The body of Carl Stout, 18, was taken from the scene in an ambulance.

He was swimming with three friends near the bridge when he disappeared under water, Cascade County Sheriff’s Deputy Bob Edwards said.

A friend of the victim, Mitch Haverley, said Stout was from New Jersey.

Stout moved to Great Falls six months ago and married a Great Falls woman only weeks ago.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Rosipal said witnesses told authorities Stout was clinging to a fellow swimmer, but she was unable to hold him up and he disappeared under water.
