Butte police arrested an alleged burglar — who left his identification card at the crime scene — after a reported break-in attempt Thursday morning.
Police responded to the 400 block of West Mercury Street at 7:15 a.m. Thursday after a resident saw a man who was trying to break into the back door of his home. The alleged burglar was gone by the time police arrived. The lock had been tampered with and a window screen had been removed. Police recovered an identification card the alleged burglar was using to release a lock at the home, Sheriff John Walsh said.
Soon after, police arrested Ronald Traynor, 36, of Butte, based on the witness’ description and the ID card. On Friday, Traynor was charged in justice court with felony attempted burglary and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
Walsh said a rash of break-ins has occurred recently in Butte, both to vehicles and homes. He said it’s important for people to call in suspicious activity as soon as it’s seen so police have a better chance of arresting the person.
