The term of Commissioner Dennis Unsworth expires at the end of the year and statutes don't allow his reappointment.
Applicants must be a citizen of the United States and of the state of Montana and a registered voter. The appointment is for a 6-year term and the job pays $51,000 to $56,000 annually.
Letters of interest will be accepted through Dec. 3 and may be sent to: Candidate Selection Committee, Legislative Services Division, P.O. Box 201706, Helena, MT 59620 or by e-mail to sfox(at)mt.gov.
A legislative committee will forward the names of between two and five finalists to the governor, who will appoint Unsworth's successor.
