A fatal accident near Bainville on U.S. Highway 2 trapped a man and woman from Poplar inside a car Monday afternoon, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol Trooper Rick Kessner said the driver was heading west in a construction area where the highway turns to gravel when he drifted to the right and hit some concrete. The 1993 Chevrolet Lumina rolled and landed on its roof on the bank of a creek.

Both the driver and passenger, who were returning home after visiting friends in Williston, N.D., were trapped inside the vehicle and had to be removed by authorities.

The driver, a 23-year-old male whose identity has not been released, was killed in the wreck, which was reported at about 1:15 p.m.

The passenger, Ronetta Clark, 27, was taken to a hospital in Williston and later flown to Minot, N.D., for treatment. Kessner said Clark was conscious and able to speak with hospital staff.

Alcohol appeared to be a factor in the accident, which took place about 5.5 miles east of Bainville, Kessner said.
