BUTTE — The man who was found dead on the East Ridge last week is identified as Robert E. Lee, according to Butte coroner Lee LaBreche.
Though the victim had a Butte address, investigators suspect Lee was living on the East Ridge for the past few years. LaBreche said he believes the victim died after breaking a leg or hip in a fall and then succumbed to the elements. Lee may have been dead for at least 10 days before he was found. No one reported him missing to police.
The death is considered accidental. Butte police said victim was in his mid-50s.
A group of hikers found the body Thursday evening while hiking down from the Our Lady of the Rockies statue. Because it was already dark when police received the report, they conducted the search for the body Friday morning.
LaBreche said he was still trying to find the victim’s next of kin Monday morning.
