BUTTE -- Two snowmobilers died this weekend in the Flint Range near Philipsburg.
Granite County Sheriff Stephen Immenschuh confirmed that both of the fatalities were Butte men.
The first, 52-year-old Alan Voss, died Saturday around 1 p.m. while snowmobiling east of Red Lion, a popular snowmobile site near Discovery Ski Area. Immenschuh said an autopsy was under way but said he believed a medical condition and not an injury caused his death.
A day later, a 20-year-old Butte man was killed when the snowmobile he was driving triggered an avalanche. Authorities received a call around 2:40 p.m. Sunday and rescue crews from Georgetown Lake and Anaconda responded, but the man could not be revived.
Immenschuh said unstable snow high in the mountains has caused dangerous conditions and snowmobilers should be cautious in the area.
