BUTTE — Butte-Silver Bow County commissioners have approved a $70,000 budget request to demolish an old apartment building that was damaged by fire in August.

The council of commissioners voted 10-0 Wednesday to approve the payment to tear down the National Hotel building.

Ed Randall with the Community Enrichment Department asked the council for the money, saying the building contains asbestos and is a safety hazard. The owner has said he does not have the money to do the work.

The city-county will likely then put a lien on the property. Chief Executive Paul Babb said the city-county would be aggressive in seeking repayment.

A Butte man has been charged with arson in the Aug. 26 fire.

The building was home to nine residents and Utah Avenue Antiques. No one was injured.
