MISSOULA — A 45-year-old male is dead after being hit Friday by a powerboat on Flathead Lake, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Around 5:30 p.m., 9-1-1 received a call the swimmer was struck by a powerboat in Skidoo Bay, said Karen Sargeant, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. She believes the boat was carrying one driver and multiple occupants.
The boat operator tried to “render aid,” but the efforts were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, Sargeant said. She said his body was taken to the state crime lab in Missoula.
The incident is under investigation, but officials determined alcohol was not a factor, according to the sheriff’s office.
Late Friday, it wasn’t immediately clear exactly where the man was swimming and where the powerboat was motoring, although Sargeant said the boat was traveling west when it hit the man.
She also said she believes the man is not from Montana, but his identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Sargeant did not know whether charges would be filed against anyone in the boat. However, she said investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks plan to do an accident reconstruction of the scene on Saturday. Officials should be able to provide more information after that portion of the investigation, she said.
