RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Oglala Sioux Tribe's director of public safety is retiring after more than 40 years in law enforcement.

The Rapid City Journal reports that 69-year-old Everett Little Whiteman will retire on April 1.
Little Whiteman says he made the decision to retire because his wife, Madeline, was recently diagnosed with cancer.
Little Whiteman's law enforcement career began in Pine Ridge in 1964. He has worked on reservations in Wyoming, Montana and Arizona, serving as an officer, investigator and administrator. Little Whiteman retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1995.
Little Whiteman has been the Oglala Sioux Tribe's director of public safety since 2009.
