HELENA — The Montana Historical Society is seeking nominations for the Gallery of Outstanding Montanans who are honored in the west wing of the state Capitol.

Nominations for the gallery, which was begun in 1981, must be a person who is no longer living, who made significant contributions to a chosen field and who was born, raised or lived for a significant time in Montana.

Past inductees include U.S. Sen. Mike Mansfield, artist Charles M. Russell, historian K. Ross Toole, actor Gary Cooper, entrepreneur Marcus Daly, journalist Chet Huntley and minister William Van Orsdel.

Nominations should be sent to Kirby Lambert, Montana Historical Society, P.O. Box 201201, Helena, MT 59620-1201 or by e-mail to klambert@mt.gov by Sept. 15.

The nomination must include the name of the person, birth and death dates, Montana association, field of endeavor, contributions and achievements, and any other supporting information.

Honorees will be announced in November.
