The Musselshell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fire that destroyed a house south of Roundup on May 4 and would like to talk to a former resident.

Undersheriff Aaron Edwards said Thursday that the fire at 18 Mountain View Road, about 10 miles south of Roundup, is suspicious. Investigators don’t know what caused the fire, which was reported at 3:50 a.m., he said. No one was in the home at the time.

The house was “fully engulfed when we got there,” Edwards said. The Roundup Fire Department and the Bull Mountain Volunteer Fire Department responded to the fire.

Investigators have identified Douglas Harper, a former resident, as a person of interest, Edwards said.

Harper, 62, is 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighs 196 pounds and has red hair and green eyes, Edwards said. He drives a white 2000 Ford Expedition with the Montana license plate 23-5876.

Edwards asked anyone who sees Harper not to approach him but to contact the Musselshell County Sheriff’s Office at 406-323-1402 or 911 or the Billings Police Department at 406-657-8200.
