MISSOULA — Longtime Missoula law enforcement officer Carl Ibsen has won the race for Missoula County sheriff.
The Missoulian reports the unofficial tally Tuesday night had Ibsen, an Independent, with 15,156 votes to 13,412 for Democrat Brad Giffin.
Ibsen says he plans to focus on DUI enforcement, services to crime victims and creating a team to focus on domestic violence — all issues championed by his wife Judy Wang. Wang was a city prosecutor who was killed when a speeding car rear-ended her car in September 2009 near Anaconda. The other driver tested positive for alcohol and marijuana, but his blood-alcohol level was below the legal limit.
Ibsen worked for the Missoula Police Department from 1972 until he retired in 1993 and joined the sheriff's department.
