BOZEMAN — Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert says he plans to hold an inquest into the death of a Three Forks man involved in a fatal shootout with a Montana Highway Patrol trooper in December.

The Bozeman Daily Chronicle says Lambert has not set a date for the inquest into the Dec. 1 death of 56-year-old Errol Brent Bouldin.

Investigators have said Bouldin exchanged gunfire with 23-year-old Trooper David DeLaittre, who died on Highway 2 near Three Forks.

Bouldin was found dead in his pickup several hours later near Radersburg.

Broadwater County Sheriff Brenda Ludwig has said that Bouldin would have died without medical treatment for a chest wound suffered during the shootout with DeLaittre, but Lambert says that is not clear. Officials say Bouldin died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
