GREAT FALLS - Authorities have released the name of a 28-year-old inmate who was found dead in the Cascade County jail in Great Falls over the weekend.
Clifford Wayne Granbois of Poplar was found hanging from the top bunk in his cell late Sunday night. He was pronounced dead at about 12:30 a.m. Monday after detention staff tried to resuscitate him.
Authorities say the inmate, who was last seen alive just after 10 p.m. Sunday, did not exhibit any signs of suicidal thoughts to staff before his death.
Granbois, who was the only one in the cell at the time, was being detained after he pleaded guilty on Nov. 23 to a federal charge of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He faced up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine at his sentencing March 8.
Prosecutors say Granbois broke a man's leg when he ran over him with a car after getting into a fight with him outside a Poplar home in May 2008.
